How to Make a Killer About Page

How to Make a Killer About Page

2016-06-09 10:00:00 | Jessica Van Liew | Business,entrepreneur,website

Writing a good about page is essential to your business’ success.  We believe it’s the most important page on your website since people buy from people.

You read that right!  New visitors visit your aboutpage to learn more about you and why they should stick around—and what’s in it for them!   And what’s more, they want to know NOW.  Not in ten seconds…right.  Now.  Get it wrong and you could be turning lots of people off without even knowing it.

We’re going to walk you through how to take your about page from eh to AH-MAZING.  Plus, writing about yourself can be hard—this will make it a heck-of-a-lot easier.  We want to make your about page one of the most useful and popular pages on your website – a page that will convert your visitors into paying customers!

Answer the Question:  “Why Should I Care?”

Your about page should be ALL about the value you give to that person reading it and what makes you unique.  So your about page is really not about you.  Huh?  Yes—it is all about your readers but told through your story.

Make sure you answer these questions for them:

  • “Why should I care?”
  • “What problem does this solve?”
  • “What will I gain from reading this?”

Make it crystal clear why they should come back or use YOUR services and not the competition.  Pro tip: try to do this quickly, succinctly and powerful—within the first few sentences.

A Picture (Visuals since video too?) Speaks Volumes

We are all visual people.  And, it’s easier to bond with people, so show yourself!  There’s nothing more yawn-worthy than a text-only about page.  Photos are awesome, but you don’t necessarily need to only have individual head shots.  Add character to your brand by including fun and relaxed photos of you and your team.  Some of the best team photos we’ve found are the ones no one was posing for or knew were even being taken!  Videos are also a great way to entertain those who have short attention spans.  It’s a great way to sum up the feeling of your company and the individuals in a matter of minutes—or even seconds!  If you don’t have resources in this area, Vine videos or apps like Boomerang, Party!Party! and PHHHOTO are a great way to add something unique to your about page.

Create the Closer

Now that you’ve written your about page, it’s time to wrap it all up into a critical piece that most people never include:  a call to action (CTA).  You must ask people to take some form of action when they’re done reading your content.  And always remember that if you are continually creating valuable content that they are reading, they will WANT to reciprocate.  Take a moment to ask yourself what can you ask them to do next?  You can bring them to your services or products you offer.  You can ask them to subscribe to your blog.  It’s also smart to include your CTA in a few places within in your about page.  Even though we would love people to read everything word for word, more often than not, they may just skim your content.

Tell Your Story

Focus on things that make you human when telling your story—what others will connect with.  It’s all good talking about where you went to school and what degree you have, but really dig deep and make it interesting and skimmable.

There ya go!  Now, after you check this out , go check out your own about page.  Is it set up strategically? Is it written for your reader?
