5 Inspirational Women Transforming the Health & Wellness Industry

2019-03-22 14:00:00 | Karen Cummings | Women in Business,girlboss

Women everywhere, and in many industries, are finally being featured more prominently, and celebrated unabashedly.

And we have to say – we love it.

While it may feel like your inbox is being bombarded with news of women stepping forward and taking on the world this month, it’s only because we’ve been waiting a long time for this kind of shift.

It IS big news, and it DOES matter.

As a female-owned and dominated company, we frankly can’t get enough.

So, to make our contributions to female-centered content during Women’s History Month, we’ve rounded up our list of industry disruptors, innovators, and individuals making a difference. This includes those improving personal health and changing societal norms for the better.

Here are five women in the wellness industry who have totally inspired us to embrace opportunities and strive to be the best we can be – so that we can all have an incredible impact on this planet.

5 Women in Wellness That Make Us Feel Starstruck

Dr. Susan Wilder, MD, IFMCP, founder and CEO of LifeScape Medical Associates and LifeScape Premier

Not only is Dr. Wilder a survivor of child abduction, but she’s also a medical doctor and a certified functional medicine practitioner who founded and operates LifeScape Premier and LifeScape Medical Associates.

Her history of being a child abductee could have taken her down a totally different route, but instead she broke through the trauma and became an inspiration to women in business, and a guide for thousands of patients looking to experience incredible breakthroughs in their health.

She forged her own path and took an innovative approach to health. Rather than treating symptoms, she has focused on the root cause of illnesses. This focus has enabled her to totally transform the health of countless individuals.

Her drive to better the health of so many people amazes us and further proves how getting to the bottom of any issue, whether in your health, your relationships, or your business, is the key to finally seeing long-term improvement.

JJ Virgin, Celebrity Nutrition and Fitness Expert, Four-time NY TIMES  Best-Selling Author

JJ Virgin inspires us because she embraced her personal brand and created an incredible business serving a particular market of people in the health and fitness space: people age 40+ who want to lose the weight and keep it off, so they look and feel fantastic.

She was one of the very first personal trainers in L.A. and after discovering that several of her clients couldn’t seem to lose weight, despite adhering to a strict diet, a lightbulb went off.

JJ Virgin spent years doing hands-on research, including working with doctors and clients and taking dozens of grad school courses trying to get to the bottom of this phenomenon of people who were “doing what they were supposed to” and still had a hard time losing pounds.

She soon discovered that by finding your food and carb intolerances and working out less, you can create a healthy lifestyle customized to your personal body chemistry and needs.

In 20 years, she became a triple-board certified nutrition expert, Fitness Hall of Famer, 4-time New York Times best-selling author, and passionate advocate of eating and exercising smarter. If that doesn’t impress you – we don’t know what will!

Dr Heather Paulson, Board Certified Naturopathic Oncologist

It took a tragedy in Dr. Paulson’s life for her to find a solution that would soon help thousands of others. At the age of 25, she experienced the enormous loss of her dad to colon cancer and then soon after that she found herself supporting her husband through his cancer treatments. She knew then that she would dedicate her life and medical training helping those moving through the cancer experience.

As an expert in combining natural therapies, nutrition, exercise, and emotional healing, she creates a strategy for dealing with cancer for each unique patient. With 10 years of clinic experience, she has gone on to help thousands of people with cancer.

We find her compassion and her expertise to be so inspiring. We’re lucky to have women like her in this world!

Meika Hollender, Founder of Sustain

After realizing that there were hardly any natural options for women in the sexual and reproductive space, Meika Hollender founded Sustain which creates all-natural, vagina-friendly products such as tampons, condoms, lubricants and more.

Their products are 100% organic, their tampons and pads are rayon and fragrance-free, non-chlorine bleached and grown without pesticides. They also created a bioplastic plant-based applicator, because the amount of waste created by using petroleum based applicators (which most brands on the market use) was not a sustainable enough option.

Sustain’s mission is about raising the standards of these types of products and making them with women’s health in mind and we absolutely support that!

Payal Kadakia, Founder of ClassPass

She’s a woman, a minority, and she’s killing it in the male dominated tech space: she’s Payal Kadakia, the founder of the innovative platform ClassPass.

Her fitness subscription service as been valued at over $500 million (you read that right), and to create it, she broke away from the expected route and followed her passion.

A graduate of MIT and later TechStars (a prestigious tech accelerator in NYC), Payal Kadakia already owned another business, Sa Dance Company, when she had the idea for aggregating workout classes and schedules into one place.

While researching ballet classes, Payal got frustrated with how terrible the existing systems for finding and booking classes online were. So, she set out to create her own platform.

Through many trials (she was maced in the face at Starbucks when a man tried to steal her phone and computer) and errors (she was having trouble getting investors and people to book on her original platform), ClassPass was finally born. Users can now pay a subscription fee and have access to all different kinds of workout classes all in one place, and it’s become insanely popular. So popular, in fact, that Payal’s personal net worth is estimated to be about $50 million.

All we can say is, you go girl.

It’s safe to say that all five of these women have made a real difference in the health and wellness industry.

But while these five women are completely amazing, this post is dedicated to women everywhere – the ones who are struggling, the ones who are succeeding, and the ones who are clawing tooth and nail to make a real shift in our world. Thank you for your strength and determination. Celebrate yourself this month. You deserve it.
