/ˌinfōˈɡrafik/

noun

An infographic is a visual tool used to communicate data, tell a story or illustrate a principle, as clearly and effectively as possible.

Infographics.  Yes, they’re trendy but they are also actually working.  People love a good infographic because we are wired to process visuals about 60,000 times faster than that of text.  Visuals transmit messages faster,  trigger emotions, improve comprehension and stick in long-term memory.

According to BuzzFeed, here’s what happens every 60 seconds on the Internet:

  • 510,000 photos are liked on Instagram
  • 208,300 photos are posted on Facebook
  • 100 hours of new video material is published on YouTube

It’s clear that you need to add infographics to your marketing mix.  Not only is visual content easier and faster for our brains to process, it is also a great way to generate more views, clicks and conversions.  The infographic has quickly become one of the most effective ways to share your message, establish authority and drive traffic and shares across all of your marketing platforms.

But what makes for a knockout infographic?

Here are our dos and don’ts for creating a killer infographic.

Do create your infographic for your target audience.

If you set out to create an infographic, make sure it’s one your target audience will love.  The infographics that have the most traction and gain the most attention are ones that meet your target audience right where they need it most. Think about their pain points and dreams—how can you help?  Think about the things they find interesting, topics that are helpful to them or entertaining to them.  A common mistake people make when creating an infographic is that they choose a topic that is generically popular instead of making it specifically relevant to their audience.

Don’t lose your focus.

Infographics aren’t meant to assemble all the data you can compile in one place.  When creating your infographic, make sure it’s not a potpourri of facts and figures.  Always stay focused on a single topic and make it streamlined.  If your reader is spending time trying to decipher the flow or keep track of the message of the infographic, their retention for your information will be lost.  Remember that an infographic is intended to drive a single, focused point. No exception.

Do consider good color combination with your infographic.

We understand infographics are all about visual stimulation.  The difference between the success or failure of your infographic could come from your choice of color combination.  You’ll end up with an eyesore instead of a visual masterpiece if your colors don’t complement each other well.  Use color to draw attention to important words or phrases or to organize your content. Here are 10 expert tips from visme on how to choose color for your infographics.

Don’t forget to consider the source.

Nothing will undermine your credibility more than sending out misinformation.  When citing statistics on your infographic, always check with more than one reputable source.  Make sure to cite your sources and make sure they aren’t out of date.  When you include links to your sources and citations, it will make it super easy for your reader to fact-check your information.
